01License and age
To be approved as a Driver, an applicant must:
- Hold a valid, in-state driver's license for the state in which they will drive;
- Be at least 21 years old; and meet the age-based driving-history standard below.
Applicants age 21 or 22 must have three (3) or more years of unrestricted driving history and no infractions on their Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Applicants age 23 or older must have held a driver's license for one (1) or more years and meet or exceed the MVR acceptability standards in Section 5.
02Personal auto insurance
Every Driver who operates their own vehicle must hold a valid, in-force personal auto-insurance policy that meets or exceeds their state's minimum financial-responsibility requirements, plus any rideshare or for-hire endorsement their state or insurer requires. Joyride requires Drivers to provide proof of valid personal auto insurance at least annually, and to notify Joyride promptly if coverage lapses. A Driver whose coverage lapses must stop accepting rides until it is restored. Insurance for Joyride-provided vehicles is addressed separately in the Driver Addendum.
03Background check
Joyride conducts a national and local background check on every applicant, through a qualified third-party screening provider, before approving them to drive on the platform. Applicants must consent to the background check and to periodic re-checks as a condition of approval. Joyride also reviews each applicant's Motor Vehicle Record before approval — see Section 5.
04Disqualifying convictions
An applicant is not eligible to drive on the Joyride Platform if their background check shows any of the following convictions in the last seven (7) years:
- Any violent crime;
- Any felony;
- Any driving-related offense;
- Any sexual offense, or any child-abuse or child-endangerment offense;
- Any terror-related offense.
Certain offenses — including the serious driving convictions listed in Section 5 — are disqualifying regardless of how long ago they occurred. Drivers must promptly notify Joyride if they are charged with or convicted of any disqualifying offense after onboarding.
05Motor Vehicle Record standards
Joyride reviews each applicant's MVR before approval. An applicant is approved to drive only if their MVR shows:
- No more than 3 minor violations (including but not limited to traffic, parking, or moving violations) in the last 3 years;
- No more than 1 major violation (including but not limited to excessive speeding, an at-fault accident, distracted driving, texting while driving, or reckless driving that did not result in injury or death, driving without a valid license or insurance) in the last 5 years; and
- No driving-related convictions for DUI/DWI, hit-and-run, reckless driving that resulted in injury or death, street racing or speed contest, use of a vehicle to commit a felony, or an accident resulting in a fatality.
06Ongoing re-checks
Screening does not end at onboarding. While a Driver is active on the Joyride Platform, Joyride pulls and reviews an updated MVR at least annually and may run additional background re-checks. A Driver who no longer meets the standards in this policy will be suspended or deactivated in accordance with the Driver Addendum.
07Records and privacy
Joyride maintains a screening file for each Driver and retains MVR and background-check records for no less than two (2) years after the Driver's last date of service. Joyride handles this information in accordance with its Privacy Policy, and may share it with insurers, regulators, and screening providers as described there and as required to operate the platform.
